Valentine's Day in the Comfort of your Home

Any plans for this Valentine's Day?  Why not romance your loved one by serving a delicious home cooked meal in the comfort of your own home?

Here's what you need to set the mood for Romance...

Setting the Mood

Candles are a must!
IKEA has an excellent selection of tall / wide ivory candles as a centrepiece.

Fresh cut flowers arrangement - recommend getting a fresh cut bouquet the night before from your local grocery store and arranging the flowers at home in a pretty vase.

If you have a fireplace - get it going!  It would be ultimate romantic setting to place a small bistro table in front of the fireplace as shown on this image.

Dim the lights and turn up the music!

Wine and Dine

The Little Grape That Could

Super smooth and a great conversation starter!

The Little Grape That Could is a non-profit wine company founded in Toronto by a wonderfully generous team of skilled volunteers. 100% of profits from the sale of each bottle of wine go to the charity of your choice.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Beautifully balanced. The tannins are very soft and mellow, but it also has a good spine of acidity. Red currant and black currant flavours. Notes of cedar and plum on the nose. Medium body with a dry finish.

Torrontés
Fresh, enticing and perfumed nose of honeysuckle, rose and citrus fruit. Palate is light to medium-bodied, youthful, fleshy with notes of candied lime peel, grapefruit, further delicate floral notes and crisp acidity. Good length with a refreshing finish.

Israel has a lot to smile about

Israel is a dedicated boy who has a lot to smile about.  He grew up in a local orphanage and is now a proud university student attaining a business degree.  Because of generous sponsors, this charismatic young man is able to get an education.  We see a bright future ahead for Israel.

We had a fun time watching a local basketball game with Israel, which is where this photo was taken.

Helping a young single mom

Nisa is a 21 year old single mom of 2 young children, an orphan and an abused woman.  We are currently supporting Nisa and her children, Nivea and Stephan, until she gets on her feet.

Here are some photos of when we took Nisa shopping and when we delivered a barrel of new clothing.

Generosity Generates Generosity!

Rob and I shipped 9 barrels full of new women's clothing in all sizes that was donated by the store my daughter manages.  The barrels arrived and within a couple of days they were all distributed to people in need with the help of Elizabeth and Sherelee, who grew up in an orphanage.  We continue to mentor them as they live on their own and are now in their final year of university.

Suyapa works at an orphanage making the equivalent of $60.00 canadian a week, barely enough to survive.  Giving her new clothes lifted her spirit.

Sister Lenna's Special Delivery

Our second visit with Sister Lenna...

On Friday, we brought a car full of groceries and gave her a pair of new slippers.  The joy was tremendous!  It's the simple things in our lives that brings the most comfort and happiness.

On Saturday, we surprised our new friend with a special delivery.  She had no idea!

The delivery truck arrived with new appliances - Sister Lenna simply cried tears of joy as she said no one had ever done anything like this for her.
Her new refrigerator and freezer are stocked.  Our new friend is so excited to have a new cooking area inside the house.

Sister Lenna's cooking area before receiving the new appliances...

Our hearts are full of joy knowing we made Sister Lenna's life a little more comfortable.  We are truly blessed to have this opportunity.

Meeting Sister Lenna

My husband Rob and I are working with the less fortunate in Belize.  It has been very rewarding, but also so heart wrenching to witness such poverty.  So many amazing people we have met during our journey.

We are really touched by our encounter with Sister Lenna, who used to work at an orphanage, who can no longer work because of her damaged knees, which causes her excruciating pain.

Sister Lenna lives in a run down little house in the middle of nowhere.  She walked a mile down the main road to meet us so we wouldn't miss her home - we can only imagine how painful it must have been.  We were so moved by how happy she is, what a huge smile!  We visited her and gave a supply of pain medication.  She was so sincerely thankful, her warm smile just made us so happy to be helping.  Looking around the small home we see no glass on the windows, no fridge, a stove without gas and no food.  We were both deeply touched and just had to act.  We will be visiting Sister Lenna again to bring her much needed groceries and gas for her stove. Hopefully we can surprise her with a new fridge too.

There are so many stories from this trip, we look forward to sharing with you.
